Beginners Guide to Pink Diamonds
Most pink diamonds are fairly pink in color. But pink diamonds range from a light pastel pink to a vibrant raspberry color. The prices per carat are determined by the intensity of the pinkish hue. So, the most radiant pink diamonds are the most desired, therefore the most expensive The 4 C’s 1). Cut—When we describe the cut of a stone, we are not referring to its shape. When diamonds are mined, they are rough and uneven. In fact, you might not even recognize a diamond if you saw it “in the rough.” So, diamonds need to be enhanced using different methods. This process is known as cutting. A good, clean cut is essential to the quality of the stone. And, this goes for all diamonds—clear and pink. Pink diamonds must be cut accurately to achieve maximum luminosity. For example, if a diamond is cut too deep or shallow, light escapes before it can be reflected. However, when a diamond is cut to superb proportions, light is reflected from one side to another. This is what causes the gem to sparkle and glow. 2). Color—This is another important element when choosing the perfect diamond. White diamonds are measured on a diamond’s color grading scale. This scale measures from colorless (flawless) to light yellow, which is less desirable. The scale uses letters to represent color quality. However, with colored stones, like pink diamonds, this color scale is obsolete. Pink diamonds are judged on the brightness of their hue and their intensity. A deeply colored pink diamond is rare and would be more valuable than a faintly colored pink diamond. 3). Clarity—Clarity actually means “clearness.” It refers to the abundance or lack of flaws inside or on the surface of a diamond. These flaws can refer to cracks, scratches, carbon spots, inclusions (pockets of gas), or any other imperfections. Clarity is important to the quality of the stone. When a diamond has flaws, these blemishes prevent light from passing through the gem. This causes the diamond to loose radiance. 4). Carat—Carats are used as a method to weigh diamonds. In other words, the more carats a diamond has, the bigger the diamond. Now, just because one diamond weighs more than another, does not mean that it is of better quality. Sure, carats affect the price of a diamond, but let us not forget the other important “C’s.” So to answer the eternal question, “Does size really matter?”—No, not when it comes to the quality of a diamond. Where Are Pink Diamonds Found? Natural Vs. Enhanced Pink Diamonds Natural Pink Diamonds—It is simple really—natural pink diamonds are genuine diamonds mined to have a pink colorization. They are found in nature with their beautiful pink hues. And, as mentioned before, are very rare. Enhanced Pink Diamonds—These pink diamonds are been “fiddled” with. Enhanced pink diamonds are genuine diamonds that have had their color enhanced permanently. These diamonds are less expensive than naturally colored diamonds. When choosing a pink diamond, it is important to know your basic diamond information, so that some shady dealer just trying to make a buck does not fool you. Always make sure to visit a reputable jeweler. And remember, all genuine pink diamonds will come with paperwork that includes all of its specs. Ask your jeweler questions, and shop around before you make your diamond investment. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
