Were Robert E. Lee's lost plans for Antietam significant?
These were the plans rolled around three cigars and found by a member of Union Gen. McClellan's army. According to the Ken Burns' Civil War series, McClellan didn't do much with this information.
I just started reading Harry Turtledove's alternate-reality novel, How Few Remain, in which the Confederacy wins. It appears the thing that made the difference was that those plans were not lost by the Confederate courier.
So were those lost plans significant or not?
Yes, it was enormously significant. McClellan knew from it that Lee's army was divided and he knew exactly where the two wings were. He moved the Army of the Potomac with skill and precision to intercept Lee and destroy each half before they could concentrate. But then as Lee later said, "he (McClellan) brought greater forces to Sharpsburg, but he also brought himself". McClellan got the scares, as he had done in the Seven Days in front of Richmond. He simply failed to capitalise on the huge advantage Lee had given him.
So, yes the loss of the order was very significant but McClellan failed to make proper use of it.
